At the airport you will be welcomed and met by your chauffeur guide. Transfer from the International Airport to Negombo and your comfortable luxury hotel, directly by the sea. The number one “must see” attraction of the island is the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya, a gneiss rock towering 200m above the surrounding countryside, embellished with the remains of prince Kasyapa”s royal palace, built in the 5th century AD, on its summit plateau. Enter via the carefully designed water gardens with ponds and structured lawns, before starting to climb up the steps to the mirror wall and the famous frescoes of the Sigiriya Damsels, 21 beautiful ladies. From here continue up to the lion platform, from where a final iron staircase leads to the very top.

After lunch get ready for an exciting elephant safari where you will be taken on elephant back through the jungle and across shallow waters by a patient grey giant. Or just relax at the hotel- the choice is yours!

Today drive south to Kandy, via Matale, the center of the spice industry and visit one of the numerous spice gardens, to see how cinnamon, vanilla, pepper and other spices are grown and harvested. En route, stop at Nalanda Gedige, a small stone temple, marking the centre of Sri Lanka. Arrive at Kandy and check into you hotel, offering a splendid view over the hills surrounding the city. Enjoy and relax at your hotel or take a walk through the city center and watch a folklore show with the famous Kandy dancers if you are not too tired. Spend 2 nights in Kandy in order not to rush and allow plenty of time to enjoy the town as well as your unique hotel!

After tea, head to the local theatre to see a performance of the Kandyan Dancers

Route :

Located in the heart of the island and protected by its geographical position, the Kandyan kingdom was the last stronghold of the Singhalese culture & tradition, until the last king had to surrender to the British in 1815. Walk around the lake and visit the Temple of the Tooth, the most important Buddhist temple of Sri Lanka, attracting pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. From here continue to Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, with the stately Royal Palm Avenue, giant fig tree, rare bamboo and palm tree species as well as delicate orchids.

Other options � do the three temples loop and visit some unique and traditional Buddhist temples- Gadaladeniya Vihara, Lankatilake Vihara and the Kataragama Devale in Embekke.

Route :

Say farewell to the hill capital and the hill country and drive west to Colombo. En route stop at Pinawella elephant orphanage, a sanctuary for orphaned or injured animals. Watch the herd of around 50 members, taking their daily bath in the river while having lunch or a cool drink at the restaurant overlooking the scene. The daily bottle feeding is also a popular attraction with many tourists and locals alike. If interested, stop at the nearby Millenium Elephant foundation, where paper, cards & stationary are made out of elephant dung, an interesting process.

Continue to cosmopolitan Colombo, offering two worlds in one city! Colombo is now fast developing, with posh new stores & outlets, modern hotels and sky high apartment buildings & towers soaring up. The traditional side is represented by old colonial (style) hotels, the Pettah market, the Galle Face Green, national Museum , Town Hall and Independence Hall and various temples/ mosques/ churches. A Tuk-Tuk taxi ride would be a very unique and fitting way to discover this city. Alternatively relax at your hotel or head out shopping to ODEL, the best shopping experience for all under one roof!

Wake up early for a morning safari at Minneriya National Park, best known for the biggest elephant gathering, where herds with up to 150 individuals could be seen during the season. Return to the hotel and relax until the afternoon , then prepare to climb the mighty 200m high lion”s rock of Sigiriya, a UNESCO world heritage site and the main attraction, the island has to offer. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD and later forgotten, the fortress was rediscovered by the British in 1811 and renovated later on. At the summit of the rock is the fortified palace with its ruined buildings, its cisterns and its rock sculptures, offering a stunning view over the jungles below. Enjoy this unique experience and remain on the top until other visitors have left and climb down slowly in the evening before dark.

Today continue east towards Trincomalee, but first go on elephant back and view the landscape from a different angle. A patient elephant, guided by his Mahout (keeper) will carry you through the jungle and shallow waters for a unique experience. After peace has finally arrived in the island, the east coast, home to some of the most breathtaking beaches with calm and clear waters, is now developing and prospering. The famous Nilaveli beach is unspoilt and Pigeon Island, a nature reserve, offers good snorkeling conditions along the coral reef. Spend the rest of the day at leisure as you prefer.

in the morning visit the Hot Springs and of course Trincomalee town with the old Dutch Fort Frederick , which was finally taken over by the British in 1795. The sacred Hindu temple Koneswaram is located on top of the Swami Rock, a steep cliff called Lover”s Leap, that drops down 130m straight to the sea. The main temple is dedicated to Shiva and daily colorful “pooja” ceremonies are performed here. Return to the hotel for lunch, take a dip in the warm ocean waters and enjoy a lazy afternoon.

Say farewell to the east coast and travel inland towards Matale, the centre of the spice industry. Have a look how nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and other spices are grown. Then proceed to Kandy, the Hill Capital and last stronghold of the Sinhala kings in the heart of the island. Encircled by hills, looped by the Mahaweli River, a tranquil lake in its center, it is the home of the Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic and most important Buddhist shrine of Sri Lanka. Visit the temple and afterwards watch a splendid performance by the popular Kandyan dancers in the theatre nearby.

This morning head straight to the Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, close to the banks of the mighty Mahaweli River. The beginnings of the gorgeous gardens date back to 1371 and they have been opened to the general public in 1824. Since then, they are a magnet for locals a well as for visitors from all over the world. Rare trees and plants, such as the “Coco de Mer” , giant bamboo, the Royal Palms alley, a “Canonball” tree, delicate orchids , flowering shrubs and an arboretum are found on the 150 acres premises. Take time for a walk before heading towards the west coast for a last night at Negombo beach.
