Day
Route :

The number one “must see” attraction of the island is the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya, a gneiss rock towering 200m above the surrounding countryside, embellished with the remains of prince Kasyapa”s royal palace, built in the 5th century AD, on its summit plateau. Enter via the carefully designed water gardens with ponds and structured lawns, before starting to climb up the steps to the mirror wall and the famous frescoes of the Sigiriya Damsels, 21 beautiful ladies. From here continue up to the lion platform, from where a final iron staircase leads to the very top. The lion rock has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1982. Visit Sigiriya early in the morning, or better yet, late in the day, when the crowds have disappeared and the evening sun makes the rock glow.

According to your preferred timing head to Polonnaruwa, which served as the island”s capital from the 11th to 13th century after the downfall of Anuradhapura. Here the sites are better preserved and located closer together, which makes it more convenient. Parakramabahu I. is regarded as the last great king of Sri Lanka, he and his successor, Nissankamalla have gone through great effort to erect the majestic royal palace and the Quadrangle, including the Vatadage, arguably the most beautiful building in Sri Lanka.

Day
Route :

Today is reserved for a full day visit of Anuradhapura, the great ancient city of Sri Lankan civilization and royal capital of 113 successive kings. In the 19th century, British explorers have rediscovered the lost city” with its magnificent dagobas, palaces, temples and shrines. The Sri Maha Bodhi, possibly the oldest tree in the world is more than 2000 years old and is the spiritual and physical center of the city. It is said to be a sapling of the original tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. The gigantic Jetavanarama Stupa ( 122m), the Ruwanweli Seya, the Abhayagiri Monastery, the Samadhi Buddha, the twin ponds, the Isurumuniya Temple and the king”s palace are only some of the main attractions not to be missed. In the afternoon return back to your hotel and relax with a cup of fresh Ceylon tea, or something stronger.

If you prefer nature & wildlife to ancient ruins however, set out on a jeep safari to Minneriya National Park, best known for the biggest elephant gathering, where herds with up to 100 individuals could be seen during the season, (from July to October), when the water resources elsewhere dry up and the elephants gather around the Minneriya tank! The park boasts a wide range of various habitats, from dry zone to wetland and grassland to forests. Other animals found in the park include sambar, spotted dear, monkeys, jackal, sloth bear, leopard and many bird species as well.

Day
Route :

After breakfast return to Colombo/Negombo
WE recommend to extend your program with some additional nights at the beautiful East coast (especially during May to October). The long, sandy beaches north of Trincomalee are ideal for relaxing, swimming & snorkeling or head to the latest hotspot, the tranquil Pasikudah Bay, where several top hotels have just opened!

Day
Route : Kandalama to kandy

Today drive south to Kandy, via Matale, the center of the spice industry and visit one of the numerous spice gardens, to see how cinnamon, vanilla, pepper and other spices are grown and harvested. Nalanda Gedige , is a little gem of a building and one of the most unusual monuments in the Cultural Triangle, marking the centre of the island. The temple has been dismantled and reconstructed in its present location in 1980, when the Mahaweli river project led to its original site being flooded.
Proceed to Kandy, Sri Lanka”s most vibrant centre of traditional arts, crafts and religious pageantry. Perched on the lakeside, close to the town centre, lies the island”s most important Buddhist temple, the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the sacred temple of the tooth relic. The three daily poya ceremonies held, are atmospheric occasions, but do get crowded sometimes with tourists. The tusker museum, the wooden Audience hall and the National & Archaeological Museum are all worth a visit.
Take an evening stroll around the Kiri Muhuda” the Milk Lake or attend the Kandyan dancing and drumming show, Sri Lanka”s iconic performing art. There are five main types of Kandyan dance, all featuring flamboyantly dressed male dancers. The acrobatic Ves dance includes backflips, leaps and whirling pirouettes and is performed by men only. Ladies also do perform in various folk dances, such as the stick dance, harvest dance, pot dance or the popular raban-drum dance.
Overnight at Kandy House, a stylish and carefully renovated ancestral mansion ( Wallauwa), just 12km outside the busy town centre. With only 9 bedrooms, the aim is to give guests an experience of staying more in a private house than a conventional hotel. Traditional Kandyan architecture has been blended with Bawa-influenced modern elements.

Day
Route : Kandy

This morning head straight to the Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, close to the banks of the mighty Mahaweli River. The beginnings of the gorgeous gardens date back to 1371 and they have been opened to the general public in 1824. Since then, they are a magnet for locals a well as for visitors from all over the world. Rare trees and plants, such as the “Coco de Mer” , giant bamboo, the Royal Palms alley, a “Cannonball” tree, delicate orchids , flowering shrubs and an arboretum are found on the 150 acres premises.
In the afternoon enjoy the amenities of Kandy House, relax by the pool, have a massage or Yoga class or go for bird & butterfly spotting or visit the Hantana tea Museum.

Day
Route : Kandy to Nuwareliya

Today the most spectacular train ride to the hill country awaits you. The track climbs slowly through pine and eucalyptus forest into a landscape of manicured tea plantations which open up to reveal stunning view through the hills and peaks, especially near Dimbula , at the centre of the tea growing area, where the track passes high above a canyon-like valley between towering cliffs. Travel to Nanu Oya, the station closest to Nuwara Eliya, where the driver will meet you. Proceed to the city above the clouds.
Alternatively travel by your private vehicle and visit a tea factory and Ramboda Falls en route.

Day
Route : Nuwareliya to Tangalle

In the morning leave the hill country and travel south via Ella and Wellawaya to Tangalle to the Last House, Geoffrey Bawa”s final creation designed in 1997. The luxury seaside escape with only 6 rooms was his ultimate commission, and is a true representation of his work, where airy, antique-filled interiors spill into alfresco spaces as if no boundaries exist at all. Stay one or two nights at this fabulous Villa.

Day
Route : Tangalle to Galle

Today travel along the southern coastal road to Galle, the most perfectly preserved colonial town in Sri Lanka. The Dutch Fort area, dating back to 1640, is still surrounded and protected by the impressive ramparts and fortifications, that withstood the Tsunami in 2004. The white lighthouse, the Meeran Jumma mosque, the Dutch Reformed church and the luxurious Amangalle Hotel, originally the residence of the Dutch governor, are the landmark buildings.
Stop for lunch at Jetwing Lighthouse hotel (1995-1997) . It embraces a rugged outcrop along the coastline just before the city centre, and is the last unique architectural triumph of Bawa. Step in to the hallway and step back five centuries. A dramatic enactment a historic narrative depicting the “Battle of Randeniya” spirals upwards. Sweeping alongside the stairway, Portuguese horsemen charge the brave local inhabitants; their fervour immortalized in shimmering copper and bronze envisioned by renowned artist Laki Senanayake.
Proceed north along the coastal road to Heritance Ahungalla, formerly known as Triton Hotel (1979-1981) another one of Bawa”s splendid designs.
Several of Bawa”s hotels are located in small seaside resort of Bentota: Club Villa Bentota, Avani Bentota, the former Serendib Hotel (1967- 1970) in a tranquil setting with great charm and the massive Bentota Beach Hotel, Bawa first major effort, built from 1967-1969.
Stay one or more nights for a relaxing beach holiday!

Day
Route : Galle to Colombo

After your resort holiday travel further north to Colombo. Have lunch or dinner at the Gallery Caf, Bawa”s former office, that today provides a memorable dining experience and also serves as an art gallery, promoting talented, local artists
. Visit Bawa House in 33rd Lane, Kollupitiya, 1960-1970, an essay in architectural bricollage. In 1958 Bawa bought the third in a row of four small houses which lay along a short cul-de-sac at the end of a narrow suburban lane and converted it into a pied--terre with living room, bedroom, tiny kitchen and room for a servant.
The 1977 General Election produced a new government headed by J.R. Jayawardene. In that year Bawa built a remarkable Buddhist ordination temple, the Seema Malaka, on an island in Colombo”s Beira Lake. Bawa\\\\\\\’s growing prestige was recognized in 1979, when he was invited by President Jayawardene to design Sri Lanka\\\\\\\’s new Parliament (1979-1982) at Kotte, 8 kilometres east of Colombo. At Bawa\\\\\\\’s suggestion the swampy site was dredged to create an island at the centre of a vast artificial lake, with the Parliament building appearing as an asymmetric composition of copper roofs floating above a series of terraces rising out of the water.
