April
The Sinhalese and Tamil are celebrating the New Year = Avurudhu. The main days are the 12th, 13th, and 14th April, however local schools are closed for a three week holiday. It’s a time when families get together to conduct traditional rituals, religious ceremonies, offer thanks for the harvest, and wish peace and prosperity to all for the coming new year. Businesses are closed, new clothes are worn and the traditional kiribath ( milk-rice) is prepared and offered. Colombo is rather deserted during this time when most people escape to the cooler hill-country or the sandy beaches of the west & south coast.
The New Year season is a very busy time for Nuwara Eliya – the quiet upcountry town springs into action and various activities ranging from golf/tennis/snooker tournaments, horse races, to car & bike motor cross races as well as flower shows are all held. Hotels are fully booked with locals and tourists, reserve your room well in advance.
BAK POYA full moon day is on 14th April
