Explore Aukana
The village of Aukana is located in the ‘Cultural Triangle, off Kekirawa on the route between Dambulla and Anuradhapura and is home to one of the the most perfectly preserved ancient statues in Sri Lanka. Nearby Aukana is the ancient man-made tank (or wewa), the Kala Wewa, which was built during the rule of King Dhatusena in the 5th century. The Buddha itself is probably dating from three or four centuries later.
What to do/see around Aukana:
- See the Aukana Buddha, believed to have been built in the 5th Century and one of the best examples of a standing statue of the Buddha from ancient Sri Lanka.
- Visit the Yapahuwa Citadel, believed to have been built in the 5th Century. It sits upon a massive granite rock rising 100m above the surrounding plains, located 60km south of Anuradhapura.
