Explore Galle

The city of Galle is magical. It is the most perfectly preserved Dutch colonial city in Sri Lanka and is a piece of living history, being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site several years ago. Over the past few decades, Galle has become one of the island’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities, as a sizable community of European expatriates have moved into the old Dutch Fort.

Many expatriates who fell in love with this charming city went on to purchase and renovate some of the neglected properties within the Dutch Fort. With this trend came renewed interest and more local development and upliftment of the area; the streets and sidewalks have been newly paved and lots of boutique hotels and tourist shops have opened up, giving some international flair to the formerly sleepy town.

What to do/see in & around Galle:

  • Visit the Galle National and Maritime Museum
  • Attend the annual Galle Literary Festival, a notable festival of local and international literature established in 2007, held in January.
  • Take afternoon tea at Amangalla Hotel, the former residence of the Dutch governor, dating from 1684, earlier known as New Oriental Hotel (1863)
  • Visit the Meeran Jumma Mosque, the All-Saint’s Church and the Dutch Reformed Church, and get a glimpse of our colonial past.
  • Walk around the historical Mansion Museum and Leyn Baan Street, explore the small shops for some interesting collections of antiques, coins and other knickknacks, an excellent place to find mementos, keepsakes and gifts for friends back home.
  • Just outside the Dutch Fort, visit the Galle International Cricket Stadium
  • Explore the city of Kataragama, a holy site held sacred by Buddhits, Muslims and Hindus alike. Keep an eye open for the colourful poojas or Hindu sacred ceremonies which may pass by occasionally.
  • See the Mulkirigala Cave Temple.
  • Take a boat tour on the Koggala lake.
  • Drive down to Dondra Head Lighthouse, the southernmost point of Sri Lanka.
  • Go birdwatching in the amazing Sinharaja Rainforest, one of the most critical conservation areas in the world for migratory birds in the region.
