Navam Poya commemorates the Buddha’s announcement, at the age of 80, of his impending death, celebrated with a major Perehara at the Gangaramaya temple in Colombo. A treat for children and adults alike, this perehara showcases all the traditional dance forms including mask dancers, Kandyan and Kavadi dancers, drummers and glittering elephants. Up to 50 animals from various parts of the country make the long journey to Colombo for this event. They can be seen relaxing during day time at Vihara Maha Devi Park, where they are housed.
