ESALA POYA full moon day
During the full-moon POYA of June, 12th June, Buddhists celebrate “Poson” when the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka by Mahinda, is remembered. Mihintale is known as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the island.
Sri Lanka’s most endearing mammal is the rare Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus), a shaggy, shambling creature, can be spotted in Yala and other national parks. It is probably the most elusive ‘big game’ in Sri Lanka. The Sloth bear is best seen during the months of June & July when its favorite fruit, the sweet `Palu’ is in season.
Annual International Surfing Competition in Arugam Bay. A-Bay is a little village far away at the East coast and was first put on the tourist map when visiting surfers praised it as one of the best wave spots in Asia. The village is very low key and laid back, with small guesthouses and beach cabanas offering fairly modest accommodation.
