VESAK POYA full moon day is on 14th May.
It marks the three most important events in the life of Lord Buddha – his birth, enlightenment and death. Houses, villages, towns and cities in Sri Lanka are decorated with hand-made white or colored paper lanterns. Many hotels or schools do have a competition for the best lantern. During nighttime, the streets of Colombo are lit with thousands of lights and free soft drinks and snacks are offered to passersby.
Start of the surfing season in Arugam Bay at the southeast coast. It is listed as one of ten top surf spots in the world. Interesting tours are offered to the nearby Pottuvil Lagoon and you could also go dolphin spotting by boat from here!
When the monsoon rains set in at the west coast, the best season to visit the EAST COAST of Sri Lanka has just started –Trincomalee & Pasikudah/Kalkudah (Batticaloa) are also perfect at this time for snorkeling as well as whale and dolphin spotting excursions.
